For years, since Disney has acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, along with its stake in Hulu, it has long been speculated that Disney will eventually buyout Comcast’s remaining stake in Hulu after their contract expires in 2024. And now the day has finally come- Disney is preparing to buyout the remaining stake in Hulu and gain full control of the streaming service as of December 1, 2023.
Let’s get into it!
On Wednesday, it was announced that Disney expects to buyout Comcast’s remaining 33% stake in Hulu for approximately $8.6 billion, following a meeting on November 1 which saw the valuation of Hulu. However, it is important to note that the deal is not officially done and the valuation could still increase.
“The acquisition of Comcast’s stake in Hulu at fair market value will further Disney’s streaming objectives,” Disney said in a statement on Wednesday, according to Variety Magazine.
A beta version of the Disney+ and Hulu app will launch in December 2023 for subscribers of the two-service bundle, allowing parents time to setup parental controls ahead of the official launch which will take place in Spring 2024.
The combined Disney+ and Hulu app will content new and old combined on one service including content from the following studios/brands:
- National Geographic
- 20th Century Studios
- Searchlight Pictures
- FX Networks
- ESPN (Select Titles)
Not much is known about the upcoming launch besides the fact that it will combine two of Disney’s most popular streaming services, Disney+ and Hulu, into a one-app experience.
