Following the huge success of the Disney+ Original film, “Hocus Pocus 2”, which was released on the streaming platform last Halloween season and became the most-watched film premiere on Disney+ domestically to date, based on hours streamed in the first three days of its release, Disney has officially announced that a third installment in the franchise is now in the works!
Let’s get into it!
The original “Hocus Pocus” film was released in 1993, and has become a cult classic over time with viewers watching it every Halloween season in huge numbers. In the first film, after 300 years of slumber, three sister witches, the Sanderson Sisters, are accidentally resurrected in Salem on Halloween night, and it is up to three kids and their newfound feline friend to put an end to the witches reign of terror once and for all.
The sequel “Hocus Pocus 2” was released in 2022, and has become one of the most-watched premiere film on Disney+, with 2.7 billion views from September 26 to October 2. In the second film, 29 years have passed since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the Sanderson Sisters, and they are looking for revenge. Now it is up to three high-school students to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before dawn on All Hallow’s Eve.
During a recent interview with the New York Times, the Walt Disney Studios President Sean Bailey, while promoting “The Little Mermaid,” he revealed that there are currently more than fifty films in development, including live-action versions of “Hercules”, “Lilo & Stitch” and “Moana.” In addition, he also confirmed that a third “Hocus Pocus” film is also in development at Disney.
Recently, It’s been revealed that “Hocus Pocus 2” director Anne Fletcher will be returning to direct the third film and “Hocus Pocus 2” writer Jen D’Angelo will also be returning. No other details on a third film have yet been revealed, such as if the original cast will return and if this film will be a theatrical release or Disney+ Original again.
