With Disney and Marvel having a strong presence at SDCC 2022, this has led fans to speculate what’s in store for Marvel Studios in regards to future announcements. However, with the upcoming D23 Expo 2022, fans of the studio can expect to be treated with plenty of sneak peeks and announcements since this is Disney’s very own event. If you are interested in finding out what was announced at SDCC 2022 last month, click here.
Today, I will be listing what projects I predict will be announced for Marvel Studios’ Phase 6 at the D23 Expo panel.
Let’s get into it!
Deadpool 3
- Status: Pre-Production
Since Disney’s acquisition of Fox, the third installment in the Deadpool franchise has remained in deep development for many years. However, with Deadpool and Deadpool 2 released on Disney+ during SDCC 2022 and no official announcement regarding the film has been made yet, you can expect to see this announcement being made at the D23 Expo. The film’s logo and casting will likely be announced, alongside the release date.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 2
- Status: In Development
Due to the success of 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings film and Daniel Deston Cretton’s multi-year project agreement, an announcement seems very likely. I’d expect majority of the original cast to return and be present for the announcement.
Nova [Series]
- Status: In Development
With the Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise coming to a close after Guardians 3, a spin-off series focused on Nova seems possible. Casting will more likely be revealed, as well as James Gunn’s directorial return.
Wonder Man [Series]
- Status: In Development
A few months ago, the official name for the untitled series was leaked on the internet by various Hollywood outlets. The series will be produced by Daniel Deston Cretton and no casting has been revealed yet. I expect to hear more information on this project at the D23 Expo.
Armor Wars [Series]
- Status: Pre-Production
First announced in 2020, Armor Wars is set to enter production in October 2022, with no release date announced yet. Don Cheadle will reprise his role as War Machine in the series, with other cast members to be announced. With no updates at SDCC 2022, I’d expect some kind of mention at D23.
Untitled Scarlett Johannson Film
- Status: In Development
A few months ago, it was reported that Scarlett Johannson was working on an untitled project for Marvel Studios. It is currently unknown what this project is, but I expect an official announcement to be made at the D23 Expo.
Werewolf By Night [Special]
- Status: Post-Production
With the special fully completed and a rumored premiere time frame, since Marvel Studios has never actually confirmed the project, it is very likely that it will be mentioned at the event. You can expect the official cast and release date to be announced.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special [Special]
- Status: Post-Production
With filming wrapped, you could expect to see the cast and crew announce an official holiday release date, alongside a special look for fans attending the event.
The Marvels
- Status: Post-Production
With the cast previously announced and filming wrapped, fans could expect to see a teaser for the upcoming film, hitting theaters on July 28, 2023.
Untitled Wakanda project [Series]
- Status: In Development
Rumored to be a Black Panther spin-off centered around the character Okoye, the series will focus on the city of Wakanda’s origins and technology. The series is currently in development with Ryan Coogler, no details or casting has been announced yet, so hopefully we will get an update soon.
Blade
- Status: Pre-Production
The film centered around the comics character Blade, currently starring Mahershala Ali as the lead role with Bassam Tariq set to direct. No further casting or details have been announced yet.
Fantastic Four
- Status: Pre-Production
And finally, set to hit theaters in 2024, the Fantastic Four is rumored to have a director and casting announcement at the D23 Expo since production is set to begin soon.
Doctor Strange 3
- Status: In Development
After the success of the first two Doctor Strange films, Doctor Strange is rumored to return in a third installment at some point… possibly confirmed by the post-credit scene in the sequel. Officially confirmation might be made at D23, although, it could be delayed to SDCC2023.
Spider-Man 4
- Status: In Development
Hopefully, Marvel Studios, on behalf of Sony, will finally announce the fourth Spider-Man film with a release date and cast attached. However, do not get your hopes up as this is just speculation!
Based on all of the projects I listed above, you can kind of get a general understanding of what could be announced at the D23 Expo. Although, don’t be surprised if a lot more is announced than expected – just like what happened with the Avengers films being announced at SDCC 2022. We will just have to wait and see what happens!
