Marvel Studios’ first animated series What If…? launched on Wednesday flipped the script of the MCU by reimagining events from the films like never seen before! Every episode explains a new what if… scenario featuring some of your favorite and new heroes! However, What If…? is the first, but won’t be the last Marvel Studios animated series.
Let’s get into it!
After the success of Marvel Studios’ first animated series What If…?, which has been confirmed for a second season, Marvel Studios has opened up a new branch of the studio dedicated to animation. Recently, Disney had also replaced Kevin Feige’s role and have hired Bard Winderbaum to oversee all upcoming Marvel Studios series.
Now with a new team fully on board and working on upcoming MCU Disney+ projects that are currently in development, this could be our chance to see brand new characters introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe through animated or live-action projects! A few days ago Bard Winderbaum spoke on the possibility of there be more animated projects introduced in the future. Take a look:
“We realized that there’s a lot of cool avenues you can explore with animation. Any project that we create is going to be something that needs to be animated in order for the story to be told. There’s very little desire to take a piece of IP that’s popular because we’re coming out with a movie and just make an animated show about it. We’re not going to do that.”
Bard Winderbaum did confirm that they will continue to create animated series for Disney+, but they will all be original ideas rather than taking characters already used or seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is likely we will not see these new animations hit the streaming service until 2023, the earliest due to how long the animation process takes. You can definitely predict that anywhere from 2-4 live-action and 1-2 animated series will be released each year.
I will make sure to update you as soon as I hear more details about the upcoming series and let me know what you think in the comments down below!
